Hispanic Heritage Month 2010: Sept. 15 — Oct. 15
Mid September is the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a designated time to celebrate Hispanic culture and recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the nation. This time of the year is very important to students, particularly English Language Learners. This is the time of year when leaders and heroes who look like Hispanic students, are recognized. It is a time when curriculum should be used to develop new perspectives about America’s cultural diversity and build the self esteem of students.
In the NYC Public schools, Hispanic students are the majority population of English Language Learners in many areas. Consequently, it is critical for educators to acknowledge this time of year as very important to the lives and education of their students.
Hispanic Heritage month is a time to celebrate and reflect on the many soldiers in the Hispanic race that have paved the way for a more civilized and equitable way of life in America. One character, to be written about, in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month is Caesar Chavez. His accomplishments and sacrifice in the field of human rights and education are profound. Get ready for that article!
Until such, please note the below New York City Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Also, as an educator, I compiled a Hispanic Heritage Month eBook for educators to use with students. Some of the pages are visible here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/37842018/Multicultural-Education-Preview-Hispanic-Heritage-Celebration
Please encourage teachers, particularly ELL teachers to make a big deal over Hispanic Heritage Month, chiefly if they are serving a large population of Hispanic children. Research and experience has shown that relevant multicultural education has a profound impact on student self respect and education success. To this end, let us prioritize quality Hispanic heritage curriculum on behalf of the students and education as a whole.
In closing, Hispanic Heritage Month is a very meaningful time of the year. May we proudly use this time to develop and enhance cross cultural understandings. To facilitate such, below you will find some local level NYC Hispanic Heritage Month lectures and events. I hope you enjoy them.
